What is Zakat?

Zakat is an obligatory form of charity that eligible Muslims give once each year.

It is a purification of wealth and one of the five pillars of Islam.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Islam is based on five principles:
to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to give Zakat, to perform Hajj, and to fast during Ramadan.”

  Sahih al-Bukhari (8)

Who Needs to Pay Zakat?

You are generally required to pay Zakat if:

  1. You are Muslim.

  2. You own wealth above the Nisab threshold.

  3. You have held that wealth for one lunar year (hawl).

Zakatable wealth commonly includes savings, gold and silver, investments, business stock, and other liquid assets.
