What is Aqeeqah

Aqeeqah is a recommended Sunnah performed to mark the birth of a child. It involves the sacrifice of an animal, with the meat distributed as charity.

Many families fulfil Aqeeqah through a charity, allowing support to reach those in need.

Aqeeqah is recommended, not obligatory.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“A boy is in pledge for his Aqiqah, Sacrifice is made for him on the seventh day, his head is shaved and he is given name.”

Sunan Abu Dawood (2838), graded Hasan

When Aqeeqah is performed

  • Ideally on the 7th day after birth.
  • May be performed later if delayed.

If the 7th day is missed, many scholars allow Aqeeqah on the 14th or 21st day. If delayed beyond that, it can still be done at any later time, even years later.

There is no expiry for Aqeeqah according to the majority of scholars.

The responsibility is generally on the father or guardian, if financially able.

How Aqeeqah is fulfilled

  • Two animals for a boy
  • One animal for a girl

The animals should meet the same basic conditions as Qurbani in terms of health and age.

Aqeeqah is a Sunnah, not an obligation, and is only required if the guardian is financially able.
