What are Islamic Wills & Legacy Giving?

Islamic Wills & Legacy Giving involves planning the distribution of wealth according to Islamic principles while leaving a lasting charitable impact.

Preparing a will is strongly encouraged in Islam.

Charity within an Islamic will

Islam allows up to one-third of an estate to be allocated to non-inheritors, including charitable causes.

 Sahih al-Bukhari (5659), Sahih Muslim (1628)

Why Islamic Wills Matter

  • Ensures inheritance follows Islamic guidance.
  • Prevents family disputes.
  • Fulfils religious obligations.
  • Allows ongoing charity after death.

When a will should be made

  • As soon as a person owns assets or has dependants.
  • Especially important when living in non-Muslim countries.
  • Should be reviewed after major life changes such as marriage, children, or new assets.

Charity within an Islamic will

Up to one-third of the estate may be given to non-heirs.

This includes:

  • Charitable causes.
  • Community projects.
  • Religious institutions.

This portion is optional but highly encouraged.

Anything beyond one-third requires the consent of heirs.
