What is Fidya?

Fidya is a charitable payment made when a person is permanently unable to fast during Ramadan and is not expected to make up those fasts later.

It compensates for missed fasts by providing food to those in need.

“For those who can only fast with extreme difficulty, compensation can be made by feeding a needy person ˹for every day not fasted˺. But whoever volunteers to give more, it is better for them.”

  Surah Al-Baqarah (2:184)

Who Needs to Pay Fidya?

  • Individuals with long-term or chronic illness.

  • Elderly individuals unable to fast.

  • Those with no reasonable expectation of making up missed fasts.

Fidya does not apply to temporary illness, pregnancy, or travel where fasts can be made up later.

When Fidya should be given

  • During Ramadan.

  • Or after Ramadan once it is clear fasts cannot be made up.

How much Fidya to give in UK

Fidya is calculated based on the cost of a staple meal.

Current (estimated) rate: £5 per missed fast

Example:
10 missed fasts × £5 = £50

Important fiqh note:

Fidya is only valid for those who cannot make up the fast later.

If someone can fast later, Qada is required, not Fidya.
