What is Zakat Al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr is a compulsory charity given at the end of Ramadan before the Eid prayer. It is paid on behalf of each household member and ensures that those in need can celebrate Eid with dignity.

Unlike Zakat, it is not based on wealth or savings. It is a fixed obligation associated with Ramadan itself.

Ibn ‘Abbas (رضي الله عنه) reported:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prescribed Zakat al-Fitr as a purification for the fasting person from idle and obscene speech and as food for the poor.”

Sunan Abu Dawood (1609), graded Sahih

Who Needs to Pay Zakat Al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr is due from every Muslim who:

  1. Possesses food or its equivalent beyond basic needs on the day of Eid
  2. Is responsible for dependents, including children

When it should be given

Zakat al-Fitr should be paid:

  • During Ramadan
  • Before the Eid prayer

We encourage giving Zakat al-Fitr before the final days of Ramadan to allow time for distribution.
