The majority are man-made, such as conflict, displacement, inequality, rising prices, food waste, and gender disparities and to some extent global warming. Climate shocks and natural disasters are the only ones that can be regarded as beyond human control.
Simply providing nutritious hot cooked meals (£10 for a month), helps to fill stomachs, warm hearts, and relieve pressure on families, and it sows the seeds of hope.
Hunger remains a major global challenge. Recent UN reporting estimates that about 673 million people — roughly 8.2% of the world — experienced hunger in 2024, and billions more face varying levels of food insecurity or cannot afford a healthy diet. Progress is uneven: while some regions have improved, many areas — especially parts of Africa and western Asia — are seeing hunger rise because of conflict, climate shocks, and economic pressures.
• Hunger — an uncomfortable or painful physical sensation caused by insufficient dietary energy; when this becomes chronic it is often referred to as undernourishment.
• Food insecurity — lacking secure access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food for a healthy, active life. (This covers both not having enough food and not being able to access the right kinds of food.)
• Poverty — pronounced deprivation in well-being where people do not have enough income or resources to meet basic needs (food, shelter, health).
• Malnutrition — imbalances in nutrient intake: this includes undernutrition (wasting, stunting, underweight, micronutrient deficiencies), and the opposite as well, which are part of a global problem.
The main, evidence-backed drivers are well understood:
• Conflict and displacement — these disrupt farming, markets and aid access.
• Climate shocks — droughts, floods and extreme weather destroy crops and incomes.
• Poverty and inequality — lack of income prevents people buying enough nutritious food.
• Economic shocks & rising food prices — inflation and debt reduce household food budgets.
• Food loss and waste, and gender disparities — both make food systems less effective and hurt the most vulnerable.
Evidence and humanitarian experience point to approaches that actually reduce hunger and protect the vulnerable:
• Targeted food assistance and school meals to reach children, elderly and households in crisis.
• Cash transfers and social protection so families can choose culturally appropriate foods and prioritise needs.
• Supporting local food systems and smallholder farmers to increase sustainable supply and livelihoods.
• Tackling conflict and climate risk at national and international levels — essential for long-term progress.
Hunger is one of the most pressing global challenges. It undermines health, education and economic stability, as well as being a potential threat to life. When people lack reliable access to nutritious food, they are more vulnerable to disease, less able to learn or work productively, and more likely to remain trapped in cycles of poverty. Hunger also strains communities and governments. Addressing it is not only a humanitarian imperative, but a crucial step towards building healthier and more resilient societies worldwide.
Every day without food is another day of suffering for orphaned and vulnerable children. Apart from poverty itself, such children can suffer emotional trauma, reduced educational opportunities, and in some cases increased vulnerability to exploitation and crime, and also social isolation. Later on in life, this can result in reduced job opportunities, further perpetuating the cycle of poverty. In some cases, children’s faith is also at risk, due to missionary activity in the guise of meal provision.

Every child, every widow, every elder deserves a warm, nourishing meal. Million Meals Mission is our pledge to provide hot meals to orphans and poor and vulnerable children primarily, but also widows, the elderly, and others facing poverty, food insecurity, or hunger. Just £10 provides nutritious meals every day for an entire month — a simple gift that brings dignity, nutrition and hope.
Our Million Meals Mission focuses on immediate, tangible relief plus community resilience:
• Warm, nutritious hot meals — delivered to orphans, children, widows and elderly in need. A hot meal meets immediate hunger needs and provides essential energy and comfort. ( We use local kitchens and trusted community partners whenever possible.)
• Cost-effective impact — at £10 per month we can provide daily meals that provide good nutrition, and relieve pressure on families.
• Local partnerships — we prioritise local suppliers, cooks and community organisations to keep money in the community, reduce transport losses, and support livelihoods.
A regular hot meal is more than calories — it’s stability, improved concentration for children, reduced health risk for the elderly, and a sign that someone cares. Small, regular donations (like a £10 monthly donation to provide daily hot cooked meals every month) scale up: they keep children in school, reduce the immediate need to sell assets, and allow families to spend limited income on other essentials like medicine and shelter. Even single donations make a difference, because every pound counts.
Help us reach the first million meals — donate, or spread the word. With steady determined action, we can turn urgent relief into lasting resilience. If we act together today, we can feed a million meals this year and turn hunger into hope. Imagine the feeling of knowing that you’re feeding someone daily at very little cost, but accruing huge rewards in sha Allah.
Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, ” The best of you are those who feed others.” (Musnad Ahmad 23926)
Send your love to a hungry child or vulnerable adult (or more than one), by feeding them nutritious meals. Donate to our Million Meals Mission now, and if you can, set up a regular £10 monthly donation as a simple, beautiful, ongoing good deed. We have many distractions in life – please take a few minutes to donate, either as a regular donation or as a single donation, before moving on. Jazaakumullahu khairan.
